Project Approach

The multi-disciplinary approach

BAIF Institute for Rural Development-Karnataka (BIRD-K) will implement the project. BIRD-K is an autonomous sister organization of BAIF Development Research Foundation and is delegated with the responsibility for implementation of all the projects in the state of Karnataka.

The Chief Programme coordinator / Additional Programme Director who reports to the vice president BIRD-K, incharge of Karnataka, heads the institute. BIRD-K has full-fledged Accounts, Administration, Internal audit, Documentation & communication, Electronic data processing, Human Resource Management, Training, Research, Project Planning & Monitoring Departments.

The organization’s development approach considers individual family as a unit for development. The intervention strategies are involving people’s participation in planning and execution to suit the family specific development needs, which calls for inputs from various disciplines. Multi-disciplinary teams of professionals stay in the project villages during the implementation period. This team undertakes systematic micro-planning exercises to understand the development needs of the family. The family members actively participate in designing and implementing the development plan. Issue specific assistance to the implementation team is available, whenever necessary, from the subject matter co-ordination team placed at regional centers. Individual members of the team are also trained across disciplines to encourage them to function in the project effectively.

Inputs from such varied disciplines are administered through trained team. This has been one of the crucial factors that enable timely decision making and efficient project management. This set up will also help in avoiding procedural delay. In the field level, input delivery system through People’s Organizations (POs) will be established which has advantages in many ways. The People’s Organizations (POs) formed under the projects are platforms for identifying problems, assessing needs, planning interventions and administering all the development interventions.

These POs are the key players in ensuring quality of implementation. Input delivery through POs ensures right utilization of development inputs by the participants and promotes people’s contribution in project’s activities.
